The Kremlin is the origin of Moscow, it's been this way ever since the it was founded. 9 centuries of Moscow history had its impact on the Kremlin as well.
Initially the main purpose of the Kremlin was fortification. Built on the top of Borovitskiy hill it had an advantageous position in case of invasion. Soon it had grown into a city that in middle of 15th century became the capital of Russia. The first Kremlin was made of wood, in the 14 century it was built of white stone, that's the reason why medieval Moscow was called Belokamennaya (made of white stone). This epithet is still used when referring to Moscow: Belokamennaya is only Moscow, not any other city, though there are no white fortress anymore [white stone is only used to protect the tips of the Kremlin walls against pollution].

The Kremlin walls run for 2 km and the height varies between 5 and 19 meters. The depths of the walls are between 3.5 and 6.5 meters - impressive, isn't it? 20 towers of Kremlin make a formidable defensive fort. The main tower is Spasskaya Bashnja built in 15th century. This is the main gateway to the Kremlin used first my Russian Tsars and now Russian Presidents. Every year on the military parade on May 9th Russian Presidents enters the Red Square through this gate.
